The Glass We Repair and Replace
Every window on a vehicle is a different job. The windshield is laminated and bonded to the frame, so it comes out and goes back in with adhesive. Side windows are tempered — they don’t crack, they shatter into pieces, and the glass ends up inside the door and under the seat. Back glass usually carries the defroster grid and the third brake light.
Knowing which one you’re dealing with is the first thing we ask about, because it changes the glass, the tools and how long the vehicle stays put.

Side Windows & Door Glass

Repair It, or Replace It?
This is the question almost everyone calls with, and the honest answer is that it depends on three things: how big the damage is, where it sits, and how long it’s been there.
As a rule of thumb, a chip you could cover with a quarter, sitting away from the edge and outside the driver’s direct line of sight, is usually a candidate for repair. Once a crack reaches the edge of the glass, branches into other cracks, or runs across the driver’s view, repair stops being the right call and the windshield comes out.
Time matters more than most people expect. Houston heat does the damage: a car sits in a parking lot all afternoon, the glass expands, then the air conditioning hits it and a chip you’d been ignoring for a month turns into a crack across the whole windshield. If you’re on the fence, that’s the argument for handling it sooner.
None of this is cosmetic. A windshield is laminated safety glass — two layers bonded around a plastic interlayer — and it has to meet the federal glazing standard windshields have to meet, FMVSS 205. That standard exists because the glass is part of how the vehicle protects the people inside it, which is also why damage in the driver’s line of sight is treated differently from damage near a corner.

The windshield in a 2019 Silverado is not the windshield in a 2015 Silverado, and the difference is not something you can see from the driveway. Rain sensors, heated wiper parks, acoustic interlayers, mirror mounts and antenna elements all change which piece of glass fits. That’s why the first thing we ask for is year, make and model — and the VIN if you have it, because the VIN settles it.

Can my windshield be repaired, or does it have to be replaced?
It depends on the size of the damage, where it sits, and how long it’s been there. A chip you could cover with a quarter, away from the edge and outside the driver’s direct line of sight, is usually a candidate for repair. A crack that has reached the edge, branched into other cracks, or crossed the driver’s view generally means replacement. Send us a photo and we’ll tell you what we see.
How much does auto glass service cost in Houston?
It depends on the vehicle and which glass is broken, so we don’t publish a number that turns out to be wrong for your car. Estimates are free. Send the year, make, model and a photo of the damage and you’ll get a real figure before you commit to anything.
Do you come to me, or do I bring the vehicle in?
Either one. Vasquez Auto Glass runs mobile service across Houston and comes to the vehicle instead of you bringing it in. We need level ground and reasonable clearance to work. You’re also welcome at the shop on Broadway Street in the East End.
Can you do it the same day?
Same-day appointments are available when the glass is in stock. Some vehicles and some windows have to be ordered, and in that case we tell you up front rather than promising same-day and calling back to move it.
Can I use my insurance?
If you’re using insurance, tell us when you request the quote and we’ll work with that. Whether glass is covered, and how much of it, depends on your policy and your deductible. What kind of glass do you use?
Glass matched to your vehicle’s year, make and model, including the features that piece of glass has to carry — the rain sensor, the mirror mount, the defroster grid, the antenna. That’s why we ask for the VIN when you have it: it settles which piece actually fits.
How soon can I drive after the glass is replaced?
The adhesive needs time to cure before the windshield can do its job in a crash, and that time changes with the vehicle, the product and the weather. We’ll tell you the safe drive-away time for your specific vehicle before you leave, so nobody guesses.
