A Parked Tractor Doesn’t Pay for Itself
Nobody calls about a semi windshield because it looks bad. They call because the truck can’t leave, or because it can leave and shouldn’t, and either way the clock is already running: the load has a window, the driver has hours, and both are being spent standing still.
That’s the whole job here. Get the right glass identified, get it in, get the truck moving.
One-Piece or Two-Piece? It’s the First Question
Heavy-truck windshields don’t work like car glass. Depending on the cab, the opening is filled either by a single large curved pane or by two flat panes split down the middle by a center post.
Two-piece (split) windshields
Two flat panes, one per side. The practical upside is that when only one side is cracked, that’s often the only side that has to be replaced — and flat glass is generally easier to source than a large curved pane.
One-piece (curved) windshields
A single large pane with a curve to it. Better visibility, and the whole thing comes out when it’s damaged. Bigger, heavier, and more particular about the fit.
Why we ask before quoting
The same model year of the same make can come either way depending on how it was spec’d. Telling us “Cascadia” narrows it; telling us whether there’s a post down the middle of your view settles it.
Fastest way to answer it: sit in the driver’s seat and look forward. Is there a vertical post splitting the windshield in two? That’s a two-piece. No post, one continuous pane? One-piece. A photo from the driver’s seat works just as well.
Cabs We Work On
Vasquez Auto Glass works on cars, SUVs, vans, pickups, work trucks, semi-trucks and 18-wheelers. On the heavy side, the cabs we’re asked about most in Houston:
- Freightliner — Cascadia and the older Columbia and M2 cabs
- Kenworth — T680, T880 and the W900
- Peterbilt — 579, 389 and 567
- Volvo — VNL and VNR
- International, Mack and Western Star — and the day cabs and glider builds that come with them
Not on the list doesn’t mean no. Call with the make, the model and the year and we’ll tell you straight whether it’s a job we can take.
Running pickups, dually chassis or cargo vans alongside the tractors? That’s work truck glass service, and it’s the same phone call.
What Puts a Truck Out of Service
Windshield condition on a commercial vehicle is an inspection item, not a preference. Federal rule 49 CFR § 393.60 covers it, and the FMCSA publishes what it requires of a commercial windshield if you want the requirement in its own words.
The part that catches drivers is the area swept by the wipers. Inside that area, cracks that intersect other cracks, and damaged spots larger than roughly three quarters of an inch or sitting close together, are what an inspector is looking for. Outside the swept area there’s more tolerance — but “more” is not “none”, and the inspector decides, not the driver and not us.
Before the load, not after the stop. Send us a photo of the damage and tell us roughly where it sits relative to the wiper sweep. We’ll tell you what we see. It’s a five-minute conversation that costs nothing, and it’s cheaper than finding out at a Texas DPS scale house.
Where’s the Truck?
This is the question we’d rather answer honestly than advertise around.
Heavy-truck glass is big, heavy and awkward, and where a job can be done depends on the truck, the glass and the space around it. Some of it we can handle where the truck sits. Some of it is better at the shop on Broadway Street. What we won’t do is tell you yes on the phone and figure it out when we get there.
Tell us where the truck is and we’ll tell you straight whether we can do it there or whether it needs to come to us. If it has to come in, you’ll know before you plan your day around it. For lighter vehicles the answer is simpler — that’s what mobile service across Houston covers.
Running more than one unit? The commercial side of the business, including how we handle several trucks at once, is on our commercial and truck glass services page.
What We Need From You
Four things, and the call gets short.
- Make, model and year of the cab. Cascadia, T680, 579, VNL — and the year, because the glass changed more than once on most of these.
- One piece or two. Look forward from the driver’s seat: post down the middle or not.
- A photo of the damage. Where it starts, where it ends, and whether it’s inside the wiper sweep.
- Where the truck is and when it has to roll. That’s what decides whether we work on it where it sits or bring it in, and whether today is realistic.
Then you get a free estimate and a real answer on timing. Same-day when the glass is in stock. If it has to be ordered, we tell you that up front instead of after you’ve held the truck. And when the work is done, you’ll hear the safe drive-away time for that specific truck before anyone moves it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you replace windshields on semi-trucks and 18-wheelers?
Yes. Vasquez Auto Glass works on cars, SUVs, vans, pickups, work trucks, semi-trucks and 18-wheelers. On the heavy side that includes Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt, Volvo, International, Mack and Western Star cabs. Tell us the make, model and year and whether the windshield is one piece or two.
What’s the difference between a one-piece and a two-piece windshield?
A two-piece, or split, windshield is two flat panes divided by a center post. A one-piece is a single large curved pane. It matters because with a two-piece, damage on one side often means replacing only that side. To tell which you have, sit in the driver’s seat and look for a vertical post splitting your view.
Will a cracked windshield put my truck out of service at a DOT inspection?
It can. Under 49 CFR § 393.60, inspectors look hardest at damage inside the area swept by the wipers — cracks that intersect other cracks, and damaged spots larger than about three quarters of an inch or close together. Outside that area there’s more tolerance, but the inspector makes the call. If you’re not sure, send a photo before the load rather than after the stop.
Can you come to the truck, or does it have to come to the shop?
It depends on the truck, the glass and the space around it. Heavy-truck glass is big and awkward, so some jobs we can do where the truck sits and some are better at the shop on Broadway Street. Tell us where it is and we’ll tell you straight which one yours is — before you plan your day around it.
How much does a semi-truck windshield replacement cost in Houston?
It depends on the cab and whether it’s one-piece or two-piece glass. We don’t publish a flat number because it would be wrong for most trucks. Estimates are free: give us the make, model, year and a photo, and you’ll get a real figure before you commit to anything.
Can you do it the same day?
Same-day is available when the glass is in stock. Heavy-truck glass isn’t always on the shelf, and the honest answer depends on the cab. Call with the details and we’ll tell you what’s actually possible today rather than promising it and calling back to move it.
Only one side of my split windshield is cracked. Do both sides have to be replaced?
Usually not. That’s one of the practical advantages of a two-piece windshield — the damaged pane can often be replaced on its own. We’ll look at the condition of the other side and the seal before recommending it either way.
I run more than one truck. Can you handle that?
Tell us how many units and what kind, and we’ll tell you honestly what we can schedule and when. If we can take all of them this week, we’ll say so. If it’s two now and the rest next week, we’ll say that too — rather than a yes that leaves a truck waiting on glass.
